Consulting Screenplays

This is the page description.

CONSULTING: Screenplays, Loglines, treatments, Outlines

Do you need notes on your film or TV script? Whether you are a new or seasoned writer, an objective, professional analysis of your project can be the difference between a good script and great script, the latter of which can help you get optioned or get you one step closer to that green light for development.

I will read your project thoroughly and discuss my notes with you in a phone or Zoom call. Additional packaged services can be purchased at a discount, if desired. Please see the rates below.

Because I have worked as a writer, a director, a producer, and an editor, I am uniquely suited to provide multiple perspectives on your screenplay. As a filmmaker, I can give you insights that a traditional script consultant can’t. And as a former college professor, with a decade of experience teaching both writing and filmmaking, I know how to help you get the vision that’s in your head translated effectively to the screen.

WRITERS

As a writer, I understand how invested you are in your story and also how challenging receiving constructive criticism can sometimes be in the entertainment industry. I will highlight both your strengths as a writer and your script’s strengths. I will also discuss any areas for improvement honestly, but gently, so as not to hinder your creativity or dampen your enthusiasm. This is a safe space to sharpen your skills. And unlike some consultants, I won’t try to rewrite your story; I will empower you to tell the story you want to tell more effectively.

I will work with you to strengthen your writing before you pitch it to agents, managers, producers, or creative executives, so you have the best chance to make a great first impression. And if you need any help pitching, or developing the thicker skin that this business requires, I can help you with that, too. Please refer to the main consulting page for more information.

WRITER/DIRECTORS

As a writer/director, I understand that this script is your baby. You are the one giving birth to it, so you also want to be the one to raise it, and to introduce it to the world. The best way for a director to stay attached to his or her project is through great writing, having a clear artistic vision, and being a collaborative talent that companies will want to work with.

I can give you advice in these areas, help you identify which production companies might be a good fit for your project, and discuss strategies to help you get your script to them. Because of my years as a nonlinear editor, I compose in shots when I write; I can teach you how to make your script more visual without relying on camera directions, which can disrupt the momentum of the story and emotionally distance the reader.

WRITER/PRODUCERS

As a producer, I understand the business decisions that go behind purchasing a script. I can help you make any adjustments to your characters, your locations, and your story, so that your script is more attractive to talent and prospective financiers and more competitive in the current marketplace. If you are a writer/producer, I can also offer advice on your pitch deck, talent attachments, film incentives, potential producing partners, etc.

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW…

What’s a Logline?

A logline is a one sentence description about what your story is about. Mastering the skill of writing a great logline is a must for every screenwriter. Apart from the title, it’s the first thing your script is going to be judged by. And if the logline isn’t great, a producer could pass on your script without ever even reading it.

A great logline should be a single sentence, preferably in 30 words or less. It should convey information about the genre, protagonist, antagonist, conflict, setting, and theme. And if your project is high concept, we should be able to envision the entire movie in our heads after reading your logline. Writing a great logline is an art form its own, and it requires patience and practice.

What’s a Comp?

A comp is a film or television project that is comparable to yours. Producers and executives will want to know a few comps for your project, so they can better gauge whether your project is a fit for them.

You want to do your research when selecting comps. The comps you select need to have been successful at the box office, and they should be recent, preferably in the last few years. Producers and executives want to know that there is an existing market for your project and that it can make money. The entertainment business is a business, first and foremost.
